In the middle of the 12th century, the Military Order of the Knights Templar built a fine round church by the Thames, which became known as the Temple Church. Two centuries later, after the abolition of the Order in 1312, lawyers came to occupy the Temple site and buildings. They formed themselves into two societies, the Inner Temple and Middle Temple. The Inner Temple is now one of the four Inns of Court, along with Gray's Inn, Lincoln's Inn, and the Middle Temple, responsible for training, regulating, and selecting barristers within England and Wales.

The Inner Temple boasts a rare selection of historic event spaces and is one of the few remaining Georgian style event halls in the City of London – a truly  impressive, unique and accessible setting for entertaining in style. After an extensive 3-year refurbishment The Inner Temple is open and welcoming meetings and events. The major redevelopment provides state-of-the-art, purpose-built facilities, including a 120 seat lecture theatre and eight new meeting rooms.
